An Armory in Salem Massachusetts that was lost. More on the Salem Armory

The Portland Armory was built in 1887, and the Annex in 1891. It also has a storied past, with 3 or 4 American presidents having spoken there (Teddy Roosevelt, William Taft and Woodrow Wilson, all in 1911), and numerous events in diverse areas such tennis, basketball, pro wrestling and music (from John Phillip Sousa to Godfather of Soul James Brown).

The Portland Armory is currently being restored as a new home for Portland Center Stage with two theaters, a large community-oriented lobby with a café and multimedia installations by nationally prominent Second Story Interactive Studios, and a new park by Murase Associates.

Love your page on the Duluth Armory. There are several armories in the Chicago area that have been converted to other uses. The best known is the 8th Regiment Armory, at 35th and Giles, which has been restored and converted into the Bronzeville Military Academy - a public ROTC secondary school run by the Chicago Public Schools. There is another armory on N. Broadway in the Edgewater neighborhood (48th Ward) that has been converted into a community center - possibly administered by the Chicago Park District? Hope this helps your cause.

This former national guard facility is similar to the Duluth opportunity. It is now the pride of the Chicago park district. The armory has five gymnasiums and 13 other rooms, and has provided the community a place to practice indoor sports, such as volleyball; to hold classes, including stained glass window making and photography; and assemble community meetings and events. It is viewed as the "community center" of this North Side Chicago neighborhood, Edgewater.
